HBO conjuring fantasy series
November 11, 2008 HBO has given a pilot order to the fantasy project "Game of Thrones." The program is based on George R.R. Martin's best-selling "A Song of Fire & Ice" series of novels and executive produced by David Benioff ("Troy"), D.B. Weiss ("Halo") and Guymon Casady. If it gets an episodic order, "Thrones" would represent the rarest of TV genres: a full-fledged fantasy series. |

There have been rumors about this for a while, almost as long as the rumors of an actual fifth volume in the series coming out. I've seen on some website, maybe GRRM's own, some casting rumors, but these have been up for a while as well. The story is that they will be adapting each book as an individual season, season one being "Game of Thrones." I think they are going to call the series "Winter is Coming." Anyhow, I doubt it will make it all the way through the books (he doesn't write fast enough anyway) and I'm not holding my breath that it will even get made. For now, I'd just be happy with the next fucking book!

Game of Thrones Pilot to Film in October
According to an interview with David Benioff in the Swedish-language Metro newspaper, filming will commence in Ireland in October. A translation of the relevant quote: “I loved fantasy until I was 13, 14 years old and then I discovered girls. But George RR Martin’s story is more complex. It’s a more human story than just fighting against evil monsters. As a writer for TV (HBO) I also have a greater say. I’m involved in casting, choosing the director, and so on. We’ll start filming in Ireland in October.” |

Hopefully it actually happens, but these things can move at a glacial pace and/or be scrapped at the last minute. Apparently some studio was ready to green light an Elric movie by the guys who made Golden Compass, but it's on hiatus because Golden Compass didn't gross as many tens of millions of dollars as the studio had hoped.  |
